What is a battery passport?

A battery passport is a digital record that tracks an electric vehicle’s battery lifecycle, including its condition, health and performance. It includes key metrics and data providing consumers, OEMs, dealers, insurance companies and other parties with transparency on the health of battery.

OEMs can build trust by helping consumers understand their EV’s residual value and health.

As automotive OEMs continue to invest in emerging tech and diversify product offerings to include more electric vehicle (EV) options, there is a growing need to help consumers maintain the health and understand the value of their EV. One of the most significant indicators of the value and health of an EV is the condition and state of the battery. In addition, global and federal regulations are creating a need for automotive OEMs to track the state and lifecycle of the battery as it is used and changes hands.

These market factors are leading automotive OEMs to invest in building technology-enabled battery passport ecosystems. These passports are designed to provide transparency and visibility into the state of EV batteries. This technology is also providing other benefits in the form of revenue generation via subscriptions, brand loyalty, new partnership opportunities, optimized post-sale support, and the ability to meet regulatory compliance needs.
